Below is the MV for the to-be-classic from this year.
PS. If you haven't checked out the Black Swan trailer yet... please do. It makes my heart skip multiple beats. Again, this is ANOTHER movie coming out in December.
Been moving and haven't really had internet... I can say that I have a renewed appreciation for Simon and Garfunkel and Sade which are the artists I happened to have a lot of songs from in my iTunes.
There seem to have been a lot of cool videos out there lately. Maybe we can feature them in the near future.
Have a good day!
What's your fave outfit? She's at the Roxy tonight.
Today's one of those hectic days... trying to figure out where to live starting in August, making calls, trying to get decent Inception tickets, etc. etc.
Sorry world for not posting in a while. Let's get to it. Have you seen the new video for Maroon 5? :)
As pop-y as Adam Levine and gang are, I will always have a soft spot for them. Maybe I was at an emotionally vulnerable spot when I was introduced to "This Love" in high school but they always seem to hit the right chords with me. Some bands just do pop well! I'm loving the whole metaphorical abuse and the billy rocker vibe in the video. Since I can't find a streamable mp3 file for this track I will have to give you another...
So, on the topic of hot girls... here's a video for Esquire that features the hot Daisy Lowe in a Victorian or Rococoan or Baroquean, oh who cares, room just dancing in front of a camera.
There are different outfits, some shedding of clothes, and some reading involved. I'm not even sure if the dancing is that good, which proves the age-old theory that hot people can do anything and look good. Oh yea, and the tune's awesome.
So for those of you who are curious, Maximum Balloon is the TV on the Radio's producer/guitarist/keyboardist David Sitek's new side project. I've been pretty meh about Chromeo's forthcoming material so this tune fills a little hole in my heart. It's perfectly funky, soulful, and experimental.
Since Daisy used to be Mark Ronson's babe, I'll put in the new, fresh Ronson track here too. (No! Not Sam!) Shout out, Q-Tip where you been? :D
This track is so 99 luftballons meets 2010 but I know there's something that it sounds even more like... I just can't put my finger on it and it bothers me. Oh well...
So much joy when I found this on my friend Hillary's facebook! By far, the most epic of the EDC weekend!!! You get to enjoy it without the hefty $75!!!

Though the weather down here in LA is less than ideal, I feel like I'm finally warming up to the week. So, not quite upbeat, here's some "warm up" tracks for the week. Definitely got a few tracks here that can make you break a sweat. (If you wanna.)
By the way, I am loving the new Kelis! (I wished I had seen her at Pride!) Chopped up piano pieces, who produced this?! Apparently a DJ Ammo? His name doesn't ring any bells but, according to his website, he's based in LA so obvi I have to go see him live sometime. :) Of course, the signature Calvin Harris twist makes it even better during the verse, though honestly, I could do with a different drop than this dirty one that would be great for massive crowds but takes away from the orgasm in my ear while listening to it with my headphones.
This one is thanks to Sadaf. Who doesn't love Ok Go music videos? But, this song trumps all of their other songs (IMO). This song is the moodiest Ok Go track I've ever heard! "Here It Goes", great video, song, meh. (Ok Go MVs) But, truth be told, I'm a sucker for synth. (If you couldn't tell already.) Note to producers: where are the remixes at???
White Flight - Panther Thanks to Scott and Sadaf (again) for this über-psychedelic track. Such a jam and such a good time when I first heard it. You can definitely hear Ratatat in the track and the ever-changing mood in the song reminds me of Of Montreal. (Of Montreal sample. They are supposed to be coming out with a new EP in September!) White Flight, I'm going to keep a lookout for you.
If you're rolling granny (or grand-p) style like me, you need to just chill the eff out today. You had all the untz-untz-untz you've needed for a while and you just need to self-reflect and hydrate. Here's some chill music for the day.
This weekend LA is hosting the largest electronic music event (basically a rave) in North America. I feel like I'm getting too old to do this... Never before have I hesitated about going to a rave because "there would be too many people". (But, to be fair, I currently do have an injured knee.) After much ambivalence, I was persuaded into going to one day of EDC. I went to the LA Coliseum to pick up the ticket on Wednesday and saw how much labor was going into make this happen, and somehow that justified everything. It was seriously like a full-on construction site! Anyway, I was suddenly holding tickets to both days! So, that is where my EDC journey begins.
If EDC is as good as its trailer, then great things are in store. The teaser starts in the daytime with some lame Euro trash and then escalates to an amazing night. The transition literally sends shivers down my spine. Even my co-worker who was making fun of the video was suddenly entranced the moment nighttime came, and obvi, he's so not into the scene.
Step 1. Take THE anthem from 1994/1995. Step 2. Strain out acoustic guitar. Step 3. Add Nine Inch Nails' "F*** You Like An Animal" beats. Step 4. Stir in synths.
I was tipped off by mon Cinéphile about a new Sofia Coppola movie coming out in December and it looks am-am-am-am-AMAZING! Thanks Est, mon Cinéphile! Even with the few words uttered in the trailer, I was emotionally stirred. Check it out below:
Sofia has such a way of story-telling, that even if her scenes are so LA and/or so "out there", it'll be presented in a c'est la vie manner. The casting seems impeccable. I mean, how cute are Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning together? (And how cute is Elle Fanning? Watch out Dakota!) I simply cannot wait.
If you saw the trailer until the end you saw that the movie is accompanied by mood-setters, Phoenix. JOY. Seeing the nature of the movie, I really do hope that it's old Phoenix rather than new, dance-pop Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. I have my hopes up! (You can check out our Phoneix post here.) Regardless, Sofia always has an eccentric yet beautiful way of picking out the right tunes. (I actually don't know how I feel about the Marie Antoinette soundtrack...) Even the B-side Strokes song "covered" by Julian Casablancas that's used in this trailer is perfect.
Thought I'd end it on a foul note. :) (But, the insertion of this song in that scene is quite perfect, you must admit.)
PS. TRON update! (Here is our original Tron post.)
Comic Con is coming up with the filmmakers, cast, and special guests of Tron presenting. The question is... who are the special guests? Though, I missed out on my opportunity to buy Comic Con tickets ages ago, if you have them, good for you... if you don't, it's possible that Daft will do some Disney viral marketing gig outside the convention center... so, road trip to San Diego anyone? More details here. Thanks for the heads up Bri!
I know that the Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg song is super catchy and a decent West Coast attempt at trying to create a comeback to that timeless East Coast jam by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z. But please, don't let it settle as your summer jam. Here's a song that's been around for a bit now but I think could define the to-be-awesome summer of 2010! Let's go out big!
“I’m so proud of this video, not only because it’s our summer hit and because it’s a love song, it just made me cry, really. It took 4 months, it is composed of approx 2000 images watercolor painted one after another (we say Aquarelle in french). It was handmade by the lovely Irina Dakeva.” - Busy P
Hello world! I am back and what a glorious day to be back. (The day the Alejandro music video premiered!)
My dear friend was worried that Gaga had gotten to a point where she could create complete mush and people would still smother it with love and obsession. After Telephone, I too was fearful of this being the case. (I love Tarantino and Los Angeles, but Telephone just seemed cheap.) I DO believe that either I have regained faith or Gaga completely has me under her spell.
The music video for Alejandro is 8+ minutes long and there was not a single moment of boredom. The inexplicable strange darkness of Steven Klein infused with elements of NSFW, army-dancing, bowl cuts (who knew there were so many bowl cut variations!), and obscure sexuality. YESSSSS, just my cup of tea.
I love it when pop culture can make me think. (This isn’t another LOST plug, though it could be…) The video made me think of:
The subtlety of sexiness. Nazis, a person who looks like an albino gerbil, men with bowl cuts and black spanx, nude lingerie, AK47 boobies, and nuns being raped are not the usual recipe for selling sex. Yet, this video somehow achieves just that.
Gender roles. Gaga seems to have a moment of defiance against the physical (and maybe emotional) authority men have over women during the scene that the bowl cut guards are in heels in the beds. (She’s TOTs metaphorically wearing the pants in that scene.) But, she is ultimately overcome by their prowess in the end. (Nun being raped scene.)
Non-immaculate religion. As the church inadvertently facilitated the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet, the church has a way of being dragged into these lives of the hedonistic and not-so-innocent. I also think the video hits upon how war and religion in history have gone hand-in-hand over history.
The importance of the theatrical/innovative. Sure, as an artist you have to become an alter ego to promote yourself, but let’s see… Ke$ha = trashy, drunk white girl, Katy Perry = seemingly innocent but naughty girl, MIA = terrorist, Lindsay Lohan = daddy issues, etc. etc. No one is willing to reinvent themselves each time to perform an art. I appreciate the fact that Gaga is still a mystery whose innovation excites me about her next project each time all while maintaining relevance in pop culture. (Is this how Madonna was back in the day?) Even the transition from the intro to the actual song is genius. This whole time, I thought Alejandro was a latino-inspired tropical song. Who would have ever thought that this melancholy, Russian-sounding tune would transition so well into Alejandro? Tell me, who else in pop can do this! The tragedy of the storyline.... the symbolisms... oh, I can go on forever...
Damn, totally false alarm on the oil spill being plugged last week. The toxic deluge continues to flow into the gulf, and I'll admit I haven't washed any baby seals recently. I'm just too depressed about the state of affairs the the world is in. We have impending war in Korea, leaders acting like ass-holes in the Middle East, financial turmoil in Europe. Crystal Bowersox even lost American Idol to some Daughtry wannabe, I couldn't even believe it.
What's the cure for our global malaise? Dancing, of course.
International pop star, Robyn just dropped a well reviewedalbum on Tuesday. Here a stellar single which compels us all to dance (albeit alone)...
Hey all. Your Music Lexecon team regrets not posting for a bit, but we've been mad busy cleaning oil off baby seals. Thankfully, it looks like the leaks finally been plugged and I have a second to share a dope track.
Though it isn't Spike Jonze's best work, I think the music video for LCD Soundsystem's single "Drunk Girls" is pretty amusing. Who doesn't want to dress up as a panda-person and rough up James Murphy a little bit?
I'm not in love with "Drunk Girls", but the famed indie group still puts out some great tracks that make you want to almost dance. Their new album album, This is Happening, is coming out next week (5/17). Like pretty much every other new release (except Sleigh Bells' Treats surprisingly), it leaked months ago and I can attest that it is very solid. Here' my favorite track:
Who would have ever guessed that Euro-trance king, Tiësto, and Philly favela-lovin' homeboy, Diplo would ever do a collabo! This is a bomb track just released publicly today (maybe yesterday)! It's been playing in Tiësto and Diplo sets as of late but it's pretty much been a mystery.
This is kind of a Music Lexecon first, so... this is kind of a BIG F-IN DEAL.
Through some MAJOR connections we were able to attain an exclusive copy of DJ Rap's House Mix and it is OFF THE HOOK! The undisputed Queen of the Turntables, DJ Rap moves effortlessly between genres, staking her claim on various styles within the electronic spectrum. Apparently she will be doing an Avalon gig soon so keep us tuned in for more info. For those of you who want to move into the music industry, DJ Rap offers classes. You can check that out at her official website: djrap.com. It goes without mentioning, she's a hot bombshell. It's nice because there aren't that many female DJs out there. Enjoy!

WORDS CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW EXCITED I AM FOR TRON AND DAFT PUNK.
At Comic-Con last year we got a flavor for Tron and Daft Punk at the Disney panel... but barely! The Disney folks did tell us one thing, Daft WILL BE TOURING again after the release of Tron. OMG... Why can't December be here sooner?!?!

This is a Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 concert review that has been long overdue. The concert was a HARD event (again, nice job Destructo) hosted at the Hollywood Palladium on April 25th. My roomie won the tickets through the Dim Mak raffle and I was the lucky betch who got to go with her.
We had both seen Bloody Beetroots at Coachella '09. Hands down they were the best Saturday act in the Sahara (aka rave) tent, and there were many other "candidates"(i.e., MSTRKRFT, Crookers, TRV$DJ-AM (RIP my brotha), Drop the Lime, Steve Aoki). The "live" aspect of the more recent show with the addition of a drummer and the boys running around to handle the mic, guitar, piano, and production gear definitely enhanced the Bloody experience which back in the day only consisted of production gear. This time I was able to tell they were really musically talented dudes in venom masks. (With DJs you sometimes can't tell if they're all pre-produced or "live".)
There's something truly maniacal about Beetroots' sound that other producers can't top. Back in '09 they had epic drops that were truly mind-blowing. This time they were about epic drops and totally creepy sounds. My favorite moment at the Palladium by far was when they laced Cornelius into the theme song from 28 Days Later. Pure, filthy beauty.
Emotions were evoked for sure: fear and joy.
Here are a few tracks for the newbs in the order of recent to older releases (you can tell their music wasn't always as goth).
Towards the end of last year, Sleigh Bells got some serious buzz from some reputable publications (P4k, Stereogum, even The New Yorker). They were billed as an earnest guy-girl duo with an out-sized sound. At the time, I very much enjoyed their track, "Crown on the Ground", and was intrigued by the tales of energetic, ear-splitting live shows. But they had only a few songs and shows scatters across NYC clubs.
Flash forward 6 months to the present, and Sleigh Bells has leveraged that buzz into a Coachella appearance, a tour with Yeasayer, and some more hype for their forthcoming studio album. Now, I too have had the pleasure of getting my hearing impaired by this duo. In a mid-afternoon set, Guitarist/song-writer/producer Eric Miller took full advantage of Coachella's sound system (and his hard-core band background) and pumped out out some heart-perturbing distortion. Not to be outdone, Singer Alexis Krauss tested her vocal limits at audience's expense, but wore some really hot pants.
I ate it up; these guys rock it as hard as anyone.
So with that in mind, I suggest you turn up the volume in your earbuds and check out their stellar new track, "Tell 'Em". Their album drops 5/11.
I'm a bit late jumping on this bandwagon... But you guys have seen the Ginger Genocide via the new M.I.A. music video, right? Well, if you haven't, do it like I did... Listen to the track "Born Free" first, and tell me what you imagine its music video would be like.
M.I.A. - Born Free For me, listening to it makes me feel like a young hippie passionately protesting... something. But at the same time, it actually reminds me of a song that is used in the opening scene of the movie Ghost World. All-in-all I think it's a great come-back-track for the was-preggers-scene-maker. She's letting us know that she can still rock the scene without conforming to her previous sound. (Especially Paper Planes, yuck. Reminds me of exploiting poor Indian kids.)
And then, you get this music video directed by the disturbed Romain Gavras (previously known for his controversial "Stress" video for Justice)... and you're like whoa. I mean he even stepped it up from "Stress"! I know there's been this whole making fun of Gingers thing... case 1, 2, and 3. But, I mean, Gavras, this takes it to a new level. Anyway, enough anticipation... not for the faint of heart... here is the video:
Is it just me or has this week been never-ending! For all of y'all barely making it through the work week... Here are two mixes from random places. Hopefully it'll help you make mad progress on that Excel worksheet. WOOOOT!

While we're on this 90s kick, I feel I must post something out of respect for Guru, aka 1/2 of Gang Starr, who passed away earlier this week.
Without a doubt, Gang Starr has been one of the more influential groups on my own music taste. They made some of the first music outside the mainstream that I regularly bumped in my disc-man, and Guru's rhymes became the gold-standard for my future judgments on hip-hop.
There's much to admire about Gang Starr's body of work, but I really appreciate the duo's uncompromising musical aesthetic. Try out "Check the Technique" off their sophomore classic, Step in the Arena (1991). Contrast that with a personal favorite, "Skills", from their last album. The Ownerz (2003). Though over a decade apart, these tracks could easily be off the same album. Gang Starr is one of the few rap groups that emerged from the old-school era to still be relevant in 90's ( and 00's to a lesser degree), and they did it without compromising their idea of what "hip-hop" should sound like. I won't even begin to mention the laundry list of MCs who, for better and for worse, changed their style to, in the words of the late great himself, chase mass appeal.
Sorry, didn't have these tracks at work, but here they are from lala...
What happened in 1991? Well... the Soviet Union was no longer, but the First Gulf War was grabbing headlines. Magic Johnson of the Lakers announced he had HIV. Rodney King happened. Good news? Super Nintendo came out. Nickelodeon blew up with the introduction of Doug, Rugrats, and Ren & Stimpy. Hmmm... well at least it was a great year in music! Stick to the end because the last track is killer!
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (WZRDZ remix) Let's start our 1991 music analysis with Nirvana, the game-changer. Nirvana is the reason why indie became cool. This song was the anthem for us apathetic kids of Generation X. Nothing can quite replace the original, but this remix is probably a surprising crowd-pleaser for an electro crowd. I also enjoy this vulgar remix by DJ Slink.
Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch - Good Vibrations The video in the upper, left-hand corner is the sex symbol himself. The video in the upper, right-hand corner is Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation" (1980) which is sampled in "Good Vibrations". The video in the lower, left-hand corner is Black Box's "Ride on Time" (1989) which also samples "Love Sensation". The last video is the 2006 reboot of "Love Sensation". What's your fave?
